There have been days lately that no matter how much I have slept I am still tired. I could take a daily nap even though that hasn’t been something I have done since before my oldest was born. After 10 years of parenting I am finally giving myself permission to be still. Is it possible that consistently giving myself permission has opened some kind of a door to craving rest and quiet even more? I think so! It is a good thing for my children to learn they don’t always have to walk past Dad to wake up Mom. It is good for them to learn that rest benefits Mom. It is good for them to see me having moments of quiet so they can learn the importance of rest in this busy culture. Is it beneficial for my kids to see me saying no to some things so I can say yes to others? Absolutely! If I say yes to everything that comes my way or our family’s way, then the yes can become the ordinary, the unimportant. Rest becomes more difficult to find amongst all of the yeses. I want to teach my kids that there are times to say no and to save their yes for the crucial, most important things. Putting boundaries in place consistently is necessary to have time for my mind to be in a regulated state to pursue healthy relationships with God and others. There is peace that comes with just being in His presence. No matter how physically or emotionally exhausted I may be, I can feel God giving me strength and renewing me as I sit still. Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for giving me strength even when I am worn down. Continue to help me to seek you, to be quiet, and to listen. Help me to know when I need renewed and to pause in your presence. In Jesus precious name, Amen Scripture Connection This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence. 1st John 3:19 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youth grow tired and weary and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40:28-31 Self-reflection What are some ways that you can find more quiet time? Is there anything to which you need to start saying no? Is there anything to which you need to start saying yes? Are there boundaries you need to put into place to free up some time for rest? Is there a space in your home that you feel more peace or a space that you can create to dedicate to this? Author: Heather Lynch.
