Fruit of the Spirit: Peace

But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, PEACE, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23

Rivers, oceans, and rainbows are all scenes that bring about a feeling of peace when I see them or even think of them. There are people who can bring me peace in the moment when I am in their presence. Sometimes feelings of temporary satisfaction can come when making a purchase of something that is “needed” or “wanted” in life. All of these feelings can be fleeting. Places with water that are beautiful and serene can also bring destruction, people will let us down, and things don’t last. There is a peace that does last which can only come from one source!
Paul teaches in Phillipians that the peace of God is so great that it transcends all understanding. That God will give me and you peace that goes above limits and our own comprehension.
Strong’s concordance provides one definition sum’s peace up the best, “The tranquil state of a soul assured of it’s salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and content with it’s earthly lot, or whatsoever sort that is”.
One area many of us struggle to find peace in is relationships. Often peace ebbs and flows and even becomes depleted. Other times, peace is present and smoothly drives the interactions with others. What makes the difference?
Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and mutual edifications. Romans 14:19
Are efforts being made in all situations to do what leads to peace and building each other up? To mutual improvements?  To mutual knowledge? Are words and actions uplifting to others? Are thoughts taken captive before they go in a thousand different unhelpful directions or before assumptions are made?
Peace referenced here is the kind that results in harmony and tranquility between individuals, but if we can have more peace within our relationships and day to day interactions it leads to a deeper, more settled state in the soul. Also, as peace inhabits our hearts and minds as a result of seeking God daily, it then impacts our perspective and way we approach relationships.
I’ve been gifted with peace in many difficult situations from the death of loved ones, to miscarriages, and to various hurts that happen across a lifespan. When things happen that can seem unforgivable, I forgive. When worries make me anxious I try to stop and turn them over to God. Anxious thoughts don’t bring peace! When I am not at peace I can feel that physically in my body. I much prefer a peace that is unexplainable!
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Phillipians 4: 6-7
“Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Matthew 11:28-30
Dear Heavenly Father,
I pray that if anyone is reading this that hasn’t received you as their savior that they do so now. That everything no matter how big or small can be laid at your feet with assurances that you can provide rest for the soul, a peace beyond all understanding.  Jesus modeled the way by showing grace and gentleness, going to you in prayer, and having peaceful interactions with all he came into contact with. Thank you for blessing us with such an amazing example and your written word that can be studied daily!
In Jesus name,
Amen
